What is Dry Mouth?

Dry mouth, also known as xerostomia (ze-roh-STO-mi-uh), is a condition where your salivary glands don't produce enough saliva to keep your mouth wet. Saliva plays a crucial role in oral health by:

  • Lubricating your oral tissues
  • Washing away food particles and bacteria
  • Neutralizing acids produced by plaque in your mouth

When you don't have enough saliva, your mouth can feel dry, sticky, and uncomfortable. It can also make it difficult to speak, swallow, taste, and wear dentures.
